Yesterday was my day for yard work and today I am so fucking sore that I could hardly lift my arms over my head to wash my hair in the shower. We had really bad storms on Thursday night, and my yard was covered with broken off tree limbs and piles of leaves. Some of the tree limbs were bigger round than my arm and were quite heavy to drag across the yard. Now I have a big pile of tree limbs and branches on the side of the house and the trash guys won’t come pick them up until the end of January. I guess I need to borrow somebody’s truck and haul these to the landfill that accepts yard waste. I don’t want a pile of branches sitting there for almost 3 months. Who know what kind of critters will end up trying to climb in there make nests over the winter. With my luck a family of fucking skunks would decide to make that their home.
The weather has turned cold and I reluctantly bid summer goodbye. The leaves are dropping quickly now and it was actually below freezing a couple of mornings ago. So, I take solace in my morning cup of coffee, and tossed this year’s flip flops into the trash.
Have you tried the new Starbucks pumpkin spice latte? I don’t usually like flavored coffee drinks, but the guy at Starbucks gave me a pumpkin spice latte for free a few days ago. I’m not going to turn down a free Starbucks drink, so I gave it a taste and was very much surprised. It tastes damn good and I am a new fan. And to be honest, if he had not given it to me for free, I can assure you that I would never in a million years forego my regular Starbucks coffee order and risk $5 on something that does not even sound appealing.
Cold mornings and pumpkin spice lattes are the perfect pairing. Especially on a dreary, gloomy Monday.
Oh yeah – tomorrow is the big night – our company Christmas party! The boss was able to book a private party room at the fancy schmanzy restaurant downtown called The Stockyards. I’ve only been there a couple of times – it is really expensive and the food is delicious. Plus it is a big part of Nashville history – it really was a building used by farmers and ranchers to auction their livestock, back in the day. But it’s been a fancy restaurant for at least 50 years now – where the elite go for an school style dinner, with bathroom attendants and servers wearing white tie!
Last time I went to the Stockyards for dinner, it was a company event – a regional sales meeting with guys who flew in from all over the country. We had the meeting at out office and then everyone went to the restaurant to relax and kick back. The boss called it “bonding” and it was really nice to have time to chat with each of the guys over dinner and get to know them a little better. When you like someone it sure is easier to work with them during the work week.
The Stockyard is all about huge steaks and great vegetable side dishes and for dessert they always offer pecan pie – without homemade ice cream, if you like that. They have a club in the basement with a kickass DJ and huge dance floor. The boss promised an open bar for all of us all night long – so you can bet your sweet ass that there will be some craziness and lots of fun at this party. I can’t wait!
Looking in my closet for a party dress for Saturday night, I came up empty handed. Sure, I have several cute dresses, but I can’t wear the same one that I wore to last year’s party, the other one is too short to wear around the people I work with, and I need something that will be really cute and flashy without being slutty. So I need to go shopping.
Last year I found a lot of really nice tops and jackets at Macy’s. So i guess I will start at Macy’s and see if they have any nice party dresses that so expensive they are out of the budget range of most of the other girls at work. If i don’t like anything there, I’m not sure where else to go. I don’t want to show up at the party in the same dress as anyone else – they would suck ass. So I want to find something nice and unique.
Maybe I should shop online instead of local. If I find something online tonight they can ship it to me and if if doesn’t fit I will still have a couple of days to find something else that I like. The party is next weekend – I am running out of time, and this is important.
When I was kid we had this cool wall hanging that my mom made by hand and put up on the wall on the first day of December. She called it an Advent calendar, and there was a row of little pockets for each week in the month of December. There was a pocket for each day made out of felt, and inside each pocket was a little toy or piece of candy that we could have as we counted down the days until Christmas.
Mom made an advent calendar for each of us kids in different colors and patterns. Stocking each pocket was always done in secret – we never saw her put anything into the pockets or even buy the little goodies while sopping. But every year on the last day of November she would bring out the calendars and hand them on the wall in the living room. Even when we were teenagers, she still put up the calendars and put little goodies in each pocket for us. I always thought that was a special tradition that added to the excitement and anticipation of the holidays.
Now that we are grown and out on our own, the advent calendar isn’t part of our Decembers anymore. I kinda miss that. But I do notice what day it is, and with today being the 5th day of December, that means we are counting down just 20 more days until Christmas. Are you excited?
