Do you ever notice that a lot of TV commercials are so totally fake that the scenes they depict are laughable? Like the one where a girl in a big city, like New York City, comes walking home from work and finds a package left on her front step. She opens it up and find a new Kindle or tablet or some kind of electronics in the box.

Do you REALLY think that people in New York City come home and find packages contained electronics waiting for them on their door step. No way! I know what it is like on the street of the city. Those packages would be snatched up and stolen within minutes of being dropped off. The brazen thieves would open the box right on the door step, take the Kindle out of the box, stuff it in his backpack and leave the empty box on the sidewalk as he rides off on his Schwinn.

Have you noticed that some people are masters of word play? They take every day, common speech, add a few more complicated words, and spin lies. Without going into politics, it is amazing to listen to professionals who have been trained in word play. Spin doctors are really good at this. They take a situation and twist it around or push it out in a different direction. All the while they are using language to deceive you or achieve some goal, such as sell you a product or change your beliefs. I like the Indian reference to this by saying that those men “speak with forked tongue.”

This time when I went to the mall I decided to take a look at the makeup counters in the big Department stores. Most of the time I avoid that whole area, as all these overly made up women are always looking for someone to pounce on and give them a free makeover. I don’t want a makeover but I do want some new lipstick. I’m not sure there is enough difference in the quality of the lipstick at the mall to make it worth $30 when I can buy good stuff at the drug store for only $12. So I took a look and the women were so busy gossiping among themselves that they never even came over to help me. So fuck ‘em. I left.

Have you caught the new series on the FX cable channel called “American Horror Story”? It is about a couple that has marriage issues that moves into a haunted house. The people who used to live in that house and all the people in that neighborhood who were killed or who died over the years are always showing up to mess with the new family. It’s weird and hard to follow if you miss any of the episodes. I don’t usually like horror movies and gross scarey shows, but for some reason I keep watching this show. I guess I am intrigued with the mystery of it – trying to figure out who all the characters are and why they are in the house as ghosts,

My mom was talking about the days when she was a kid in school. She says that the school would not let anyone go to public school if they were pregnant.

One of her friends turned up pregnant and her parents found out and told her she had to get an abortion, which was not even legal back then. So she and the guy who got her pregnant ran away together and no one ever heard from them again.

I can’t imagine the heartache all that must have caused. I’m glad we have much better attitudes about unplanned pregnancies in today’s world.

Today I wanted to spend a few hours at the lake, so I packed a small picnic lunch and a couple of cold drinks, found a beach towel in the back of the closet, and grabbed some sunscreen from the medicine cabinet. Then I drove the 6 or 7 miles to the closest sand beach along the big lake near my house. I was concerned that the lake would be crowded because of the heat and the holiday weekend, but when I pulled up to the park entrance, the gate was shut and a park ranger was turning people away.

I pulled up to the ranger and asked what was going on and he wouldn’t say anything other than the police had been called and shut down the park access for at least an hour. He told me I could try back in about an hour or go to one of the other park beaches.

Later I found out that someone had drowned there at the lake. That was so sad – I can’t imagine the horror of having someone you love die in the water when they were supposed to be having fun. I hope it was an accident and not anything malicious. I thought they might have a news story about the death on the news tonight, but nothing was mentioned.

I went to a different beach – there is another one just 2 miles away. I enjoyed my time in the sun and the water, but now that I know it was the end of someone else’s life nearby, it makes me sad for them and their family.

Charlie Sheen is in the news so often that I’m amazed that his hit television series, Two and a Half Men, is still on the air. It really is a great show, one that I try and catch when I can. The writers deserve a pat on the back and a nice bonus check each for keeping the characters fresh and exciting year after year and I hope that it continues to be on the air for a very long time. But if Charlie Sheen doesn’t keep his nose clean, it could spell disaster for the whole cast and crew at some point.
